Sling Questions

How Easy is a Sling to use?

Using a Rockin’ Baby Sling is very easy, but does take a little time and practice to learn. Please read over the instructions you receive with your sling to learn how to use it. Once you’ve become proficient with it you will be able to put your child in the sling easily, securely, quickly and comfortably. You will find that it swiftly becomes a simple and natural process. If you ever need more help you can contact us by the support form on the Contact page to walk you through your early learning stages of babywearing. We’ve been wearing our children for years now and have lots of experience and knowledge that we’ll happily pass along.

You will have more success learning to use the sling if you start out with a fed and rested baby. You may also find that it is easier to first try it with your baby’s weight supported in your lap.

Once baby is securely in the sling, quickly stand and start moving… baby loves the motion.

Can I breast feed my baby in the Rockin’ Baby Sling?

The sling is once of the nicest, most comfortable and nurturing places to breast feed your baby. It is also very private, as you can use the tail of the sling to cover up with, allowing you to comfortably breast feed your baby anywhere, as soon as baby is hungry.

How do I breast feed my baby in the Rockin’ Baby Sling?

Put your baby in the sling in a cradle hold, with the sling compartment adjusted so it is riding high, just below breast level, then pull down the inner fabric of the sling.

Once baby is latched on you can hold baby’s head slightly so it is comfortable for you and doesn’t pull, or you may want to adjust the sling slightly to support baby’s head more or slide a small folded receiving blanket under baby’s head.

When baby begins sitting up you can even breast feed with baby in a seated cradle hold or hip carry position.

Can I wear twins in the Rockin’ Baby Sling?

As newborns you can put both babies in the sling together, side by side, with one’s head at the other’s feet — like two kids sharing a bed. As they get bigger you can wear a pouch on one shoulder, with one twin, and a sling that can be adjusted when it is on over the other shoulder, with the other twin… or you can give your partner one of them to wear.

Is it safe?

The Rockin’ Baby Sling is very safe and secure when used properly. It is the responsibility of the user to follow the instructions and read the safety and warnings. Use common sense when using the sling and it will be safe. Always keep one hand on baby until you are very comfortable using the sling. Be aware of how baby’s body may extend beyond yours when moving around doorjambs, hot items, sharp corners etcetera. Never use while cooking. Keep a hold of baby when bending or moving quickly. Remember there are no straps holding your baby in. It is possible for a child to climb out of the sling, so do not use the sling with an uncooperative toddler. Click here to read the full safety guidelines.

Is it comfortable?

The Rockin’ Baby Sling is very comfortable. Instead of arms going numb when you carry baby for too long, the sling distributes weight across shoulder, upper back and hip, and as baby grows bigger, you grow stronger. The shoulder strap can be spread out to form a cap over the shoulder so that it fits very comfortably and nicely distributes baby’s weight. It is much more comfortable to wear the sling so that it fits snugly, with baby’s bottom reaching to your belly button to about 6 inches below – if baby is any lower than that you may feel it in your back. It is also good to change shoulders periodically. With a heavier child you may want to lower the rings slightly.

At what age can baby be worn in the Rockin’ Baby Sling?

Baby can be worn in the sling from the time of birth until 40 pounds. You can also change carrying positions to match baby’s mood and development.

Is it okay to wear a premature baby in the Rockin’ Baby Sling?

It is great to wear premature babies. Wearing your baby is a lot like an extension of time in the womb with baby able to feel and hear your breath, your heartbeat, your voice, and be close enough so that baby’s needs can be met almost instantly.

How do I wash the Rockin’ Baby Sling?

The sling should be washed in cold water on the gentle cycle. To quiet the clanking rings, pin or tie a couple of socks around them. Tumble dry low (with the socks still around the rings). It is best not to use any liquid softeners.

Is the fabric safe?

The slings are made of very breathable fabrics, all 100% cotton, unless it states otherwise in the product details.  Also, all of our sling fabric is pre-washed in salt water to set the colors, prevent shrinkage and to soften the fabric.

What kind of fabrics do you use?

All of our slings and pouches are made out of cotton, breathable fabrics.  The majority of them are made of 100% cotton poplin or cotton sateen, the rest are either 100% cotton twill, 95% cotton / 5% lycra, or a linen / cotton blend.  We pre-wash all of the fabrics before they are sewn so you don’t have any shrinkage or running. We also have 100% organic cotton poplin and sateen fabric printed with low-impact dyes with our exclusive Rockin’ Baby designs.

Are the fabrics breathable?

All of the fabrics we use are very breathable.  We choose our fabrics specifically for their breathable quality.

Will my Rockin’ Baby Sling have a pocket?

All of our older sling styles have a pocket with a Velcro closure, and the newer fabrics have a pocket with a zipper closure.  The reversible slings have 2 pockets, one on both sides of the tail.

How do you adjust it?

The tail is pulled through both rings, then doubled back through the top ring like a belt. You pull the tail to adjust the size. The front and back rails of the compartment can also be adjusted independently by pulling the appropriate side of the tail just below the rings.

What about the lack of padding?

We have found padding to be bulky, hot and unnecessary. It doesn’t make the sling any more comfortable, but does make it less versatile. The lack of padding makes it comfortable on hot days, easy to fit into a diaper bag, easier for nursing baby in the sling, easier to adjust and change babies position, and more useful as a handy blanket.

How strong are the rings?

We use aluminum rings.  Our aluminum rings are tested by our ring supplier in the following ways:

* Impact Testing

* Pull Testing

* Soaking in bleach and then a full washer/dryer cycle

* Freezing followed by additional impact testing

* Heating followed by additional pull testing

Additionally, each ring is individually tested and inspected before shipment. It must pass an impact test and a 250 pound pull test before being considered ready to ship.

Where are the Rockin’ Baby Slings made?

All of our slings and pouches are made in Richmond, Virginia by hardworking moms and dads!  We make our Rockin’ Baby Slings and Pouches here so that we can be sure of the quality.  We get to see every sling and pouch before it is shipped.

Why does your sling cost more?

Quality! We make a premium quality product here in Richmond, Virginia, not abroad. Because they are made here we can constantly monitor production, making sure that everything meets our high standards and safety requirements. Our slings also cost us more to make because we use 2 1/2 yards of high quality fabric on one-sided slings and 5 yards on reversible slings that we then pre-wash.  Our pouches are fully adjustable and reversible with zippers, and are made with 3 yards of fabric.  All of our slings and pouches are sewn with 40 lb weight thread, which helps make them even stronger. We pay everyone who works with us a good, fair, living wage here in Richmond.

Can I purchase one at a retail store?

Yes. We are working on updating our STORES LINK with a listing of boutiques that carry Rockin’ Baby Slings.
